The Best Way to Switch Between Heating & Cooling

The Best Way to Switch Between Heating & Cooling

As the weather starts to warm up, many of us breathe a sigh of relief! Won’t it be nice to have sunshine a little longer and have the ability to spend more time outside with each passing day?

As you think about things you need to do to switch between winter and spring activities, one thing that will need to be done is prepare your HVAC system to switch between heating & cooling. When it comes to switching between heating & cooling, it would seem you can just flick the button on the thermostat, and voila! The truth is, however, that this isn’t the best way to adjust your thermostat or maintain your HVAC system.

There are some best practices for switching between heating & cooling as you transition from the winter to spring season.

  1. Adjust Gently – One way to help your HVAC system switch from heating to cooling is to adjust your thermostat gently between temperatures. You can change the heat degree setting up and down for comfort for a few weeks prior to actually changing over to the cooling system.
  2. Timing – It’s important to wait until your system has cut off during an intermediate period before making the switch. This is usually when it has achieved the set temperature on your thermostat, and it will temporarily cut off. This is the perfect time to hit the button on your thermostat to switch from heating to cooling because it puts less strain on your HVAC system than trying to switch mid-cycle.
